'Mark-ed (improvement) '[2009]
Spray paint | acrylic | doilies
'The work explores the issues of protection, decoration and the disparities arising relative to age and society over ownership of our visual environment. This work was derived by my own experience of being struck by a street artist (graffiti), with images that I enjoyed, only to have it removed (painted over) by authorities without my consent. This left me with a mismatched palette of
colours on my wall.
I became intrigued by the notion of claiming ownership of our environments. Is it a basic human attribute to want to leave your mark, to reference that you once existed, that you participated and engaged? Our streets are under fire. Factions claim territory to have it taken away again. One with spray can, the other with paint roller. Both are seemingly out of control. Words are covered with paint blotches to be covered with words again. I seek to discover who owns the urban fabric and who has the right to say whether something is displeasing to the eye or not.'
