'Man The Humping Guns' [2009]
Pen + watercolour
'In Man The Humping Guns, Philip Rosieur explores uncomfortable and unsettling notions that underpin our social existence.Arrays of hyper-masculine and overtly feminine characters inhabit a surreal world, where social
taboos such as explicit sexuality, the bizarre, madness and violence run rampant.
His employment of an innocent style of illustration captures a savage contemporary universe where
careless females wound men while men observe in a paralytic state of apathy.
There are old-time gangsters and gun toting soldiers. Personas are excessive and grandiose, pointing to a sad reality of shallow, empty and pathetic stereotypes.
Women are depicted both inflicting cruelties as well as enduring them. They variously carry pistols, wear blindfolds and appear in dominant groups. Despite the female not always being depicted, her constant presence is always felt. This alludes to her overbearing nature and heralds the redundancy of her male counterparts.'
