'When you think of young boys playing - boys of pre-school and primary school age - what sorts of images come to mind? Running around; kicking balls; climbing trees; building forts; playing cops and robber; play fighting? Such vintage stereotypes could be seen as outdated, but many of us still accept them as signifiers of boyish play, just as dolls are still generally considered 'girly'. But in recent decades these gender stereotypes, in particular those of the 'boys will be boys' variety, have become politically incorrect, and some sectors of society have begun to push against them.
This has evolved from concern that the male preoccupation with guns, way and fighting is destructive, and that the toy gun play of little boys is its likely genesis.
But can the 'war, weapon and superhero' play that boys love simply be broken like a bad habit, or is it more deeping embedded in their concept of masculinity and understanding of their world?'
