'The Politics of Old Age' [2008]
Photography | diatron print | lightbox
'Ageism in contemporary life has captured my interest. Our identity is culturally constructed in social discourse. It is imposed by the society to which one lives and is one of cultural imperialism that favours its younger counterparts. One cannot escape ageism. The skin embodies the most intimate of experiences, and is a public marker of a person. Old age as a political location has been ignored. Age relations speak directly to issues of identity and power, or the absence thereof. By increasing the visibility of the elderly in a liberating way, I intend to encourage discourse around ageing. I seek to reflect the critical engagement in ageing, not only to highlight the complex mediations of ageing by cultural construction, but also by allowing self-representation. This enables a voice for the elderly to speak for themselves and create their own identity and power. Locating the ageing perspective in opposition to dominant culture helps to turn ideas of social position and power inside out and review myths around ageing. I have used the potency of advertising media formats as a site of struggle to discuss the very meaning of ageing.'
